The ClipTools Microphone Test checks whether your microphone is working by showing a live input-level meter - a bar that moves as you speak, hum, or tap the mic. It reports the name of the detected microphone so you can confirm the right device is active, and it lets you switch between connected input devices such as a laptop mic, a USB mic, or a Bluetooth headset. There is no recording, no signup, and nothing to download or install. Just allow microphone access and start talking.

Everything runs entirely inside your browser. The tool uses the browser's getUserMedia API to access the live microphone stream and the Web Audio AnalyserNode to measure its volume in real time, which drives the moving level meter. No audio is ever recorded, saved, or uploaded - the analysis is live only and never leaves your device. That makes it a quick, private way for remote workers, gamers, streamers, and anyone joining a call to confirm their mic works before it matters.

Why use this tool

Nothing recorded or uploaded

The tool only reads your live input level through the Web Audio AnalyserNode to move the meter. No audio is recorded, saved, or sent to a server, so your voice never leaves your device.

Instant visual confirmation

A live level meter moves the moment you speak, giving you immediate proof that your microphone is working without playing anything back or downloading a file.

Switch between input devices

See the detected microphone name and pick from any connected input - laptop mic, USB mic, or Bluetooth headset - to confirm the right device is active.

No install, works in the browser

There is nothing to download, sign up for, or configure. The test runs in any modern browser using built-in web audio APIs over a secure connection.

How to use the Microphone Test

  1. Start the test

Open the Microphone Test page and click the start button to begin checking your input.

  2. Allow microphone access

When your browser shows the permission prompt, choose Allow so the tool can read your live microphone level.

  3. Select your microphone

Check the detected device name and use the selector to switch to your headset, USB mic, or built-in microphone if needed.

  4. Speak and watch the meter

Talk at a normal volume and watch the level bar move. Clear movement means your mic is working and the level is healthy.

  5. Adjust if needed

If the bar barely moves or constantly maxes out, adjust your input volume in your system settings and check the meter again.

Popular use cases

  • Testing your microphone before joining a video call, meeting, or interview so you are not the person nobody can hear
  • Verifying that a new USB microphone or gaming headset is detected and picking up your voice at a good level
  • Checking that your input level is not too low or too high before recording a podcast, voiceover, or stream
  • Troubleshooting a mic not working problem by confirming which device the browser sees and whether any signal is coming through

Frequently asked questions

Is this microphone test free?
Yes, it is completely free with no signup and no limits. You can test your microphone as many times as you like. The tool is ad-supported, which keeps the test itself free of charge.
Is anything recorded or uploaded?
No. Nothing is recorded, saved, or uploaded. The tool only reads the live audio level to move the on-screen meter, and that analysis happens entirely in your browser. Your voice never leaves your device and is not stored anywhere.
Why does it ask for microphone permission?
Your browser blocks any site from accessing your microphone until you explicitly allow it, which protects your privacy. When you start the test, the browser shows a permission prompt - choose Allow so the tool can read the live input level. The permission applies only to this page, and you can revoke it at any time in your browser settings.
Can I choose which microphone to test?
Yes. The tool reports the name of the detected microphone and provides a device selector, so you can switch between any connected input such as a built-in laptop mic, a USB microphone, or a Bluetooth headset. This is useful for confirming the headset you plugged in is the one actually being used.
How does the microphone test work under the hood?
The tool uses the browser's getUserMedia API to open a live stream from your selected microphone, then feeds it into a Web Audio AnalyserNode that measures the signal's volume in real time. That volume reading drives the moving level meter. No file is created and no audio is captured to disk - the processing is purely live.
What does the level meter tell me?
The meter shows how loud your microphone input is right now. If the bar moves clearly when you speak at a normal volume, your mic is working and the level is healthy. If it barely moves, your input is too low or the mic is muted; if it slams to the top constantly, the input gain is too high and may distort.
Which browsers and devices does it support?
It works in any modern browser that supports getUserMedia and the Web Audio API, including recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop and mobile. A secure HTTPS connection is required for microphone access, which ClipTools provides. No app or extension is needed.
My mic still isn't working - what should I check?
First make sure you clicked Allow on the permission prompt and that the correct device is selected in the tool. Then check that the mic is not muted in your operating system's sound settings and that no other app is holding exclusive access to it. Unplugging and reconnecting a USB or Bluetooth mic, then refreshing the page, resolves most detection problems.
